Gettysburg is a fascinating place to visit. Every year thousands of people come here from across the country to re-create the historic (and very bloody) battle of 1863, where over 20,000 men lost their lives in just three days. Most wear authentic handstitched wool militaryu niforms, sleep in canvas tents, and generally stay in character for the entire event. Even when not in public veiw a chain of command is often adhered to and lower ranking soldiers address their superiors as sir. For visitors, its a chance to step back in time and be surrounded by the sites and sounds of the 19th century.
The three day events includes a massive living history camp with a field hospital and hudreds of non-military reenactors, i.e Confederate prisoners, freed slaves, cooks, blacksmiths, embalmers and surgeons, all committed to portraying life inside a Union army camp down to the tiniest detail. As well as scores Civil War authors and historians speaking on a wide range of topics threwout the day. Click any of the links below to listen to an attached audio file from the 2008 event.
